Petition #20881661

Abstract

The late Victor Page was a resident of Saint Domingue. While living on that island, he wrote a will in 1806, in which he granted freedom to his mulatto slave by the name of Sanite and also named a man called Delbert as his testamentary executor. Page later immigrated to Cuba, where he died in 1809, soon after his arrival. Upon his death, he left his holographic will with Delbert and entrusted him with making sure that Sanite's emancipation is ratified. It is now 1816, and Delbert has had to leave Louisiana to attend to some business, and he may not be able to come back. He has therefore written a letter to one René Blanchet, the petitioner, giving him power of attorney to carry on the emancipation formalities. On the strength of this letter, as well as an affidavit from several local residents testifying to Sanite's character, Blanchet asks the court to order announcement of the emancipation so that he can proceed if there is no opposition [Original in French].
