Petition #20881871

Abstract

In 1816, prior to leaving for France, the widow of Martin Lamothe, Elisabeth, gave power of attorney to Dr. Yves LeMonnier and Alexis Cesar Bonamy, directing them on how they should handle her affairs. In particular, she asked them to emancipate her then twenty-eight-year-old mulatto slave named Sannite, a Creole from Saint Domingue, as soon as the latter had reached the age of thirty. She also directed them to emancipate Sannite's two-year-old daughter Sylvanie as well as another child soon-to-be born. The emancipation was to be granted as a reward for all the proofs of attachment Sannite had always given her. She further stated that, until the emancipation was official, she wanted Sannite to live as if she were free and to enjoy the fruits of her labor without paying anything to her owner. She also enjoined the two men, should Sannite commit any crime, to represent her before the authorities and to ensure that she would be treated with "indulgence." Sannite has now reached her thirtieth birthday. Yves LeMonnier has therefore come to court to execute the wishes of Mrs. Lamothe. He asks the court to authorize him to "fill all formality required by law" for the purpose of emancipating Sannite.
