Candido Gomez, claiming that he was born a free person in St. Salvador, Brazil, petitions to have his freedom recognized. Gomez states that he was abducted when the vessel on which he was working, and which was "bound from St. Salvador to Havana," was captured. Gomez contends that he was "detained" by Alexander Bonneval [Bonlivar] who maintains him as a slave. Gomez prays that his status as a free man be recognized and that he be granted his freedom. Related documents reveal that Gomez's mother was a slave; his father, a white man, was his mother's owner. A witness related that Candido lived as a free man and was treated as a son, and not as slave, by his father.
