Robert D. Richardson represents that he purchased a slave named Manuel for $1,200 from David B. Phillips, a once resident of Kentucky. Phillips represented Manuel as "a first rate carpenter and House Joiner" and about forty years of age. Upon receiving the slave, Richardson discovered that Manuel is neither a carpenter nor a joiner by trade, but "a notorious thief" who is actually about forty-nine years old. Richardson claims to be the victim of fraud. He prays that the sale be rescinded and Phillips condemned to take back the slave and to refund the $1,200, or to reduce the sale price to the actual value of the slave. He also asks for costs of suit and damages.
