Petition #20881908

Abstract

Genevieve, a free woman of color, represents that, while on the plantation of "Madam" Chevalier Morant, she was "assaulted, arrested, and seized" by Edmond Dreux and Francois Doriocourt Jr. She was then brought to the plantation of Felicité Bernoudy, widow Doriocourt, where she was "tied with a rope and cruelly flogged" for three days by Dreux, Doriocourt and two slaves, a "negro" man named Antoine and a mulatto named Francois. Dreux and Doriocourt then left her at the door of Mr. Darcantel, the "syndic" of the parish. Genevieve was soon recovered by Mrs. Morant and sent to the city, where she was arrested for assault and battery upon arrival. After her release, she received medical treatment, yet found herself unable to earn her livelihood for two months. Dreux and Doriocourt were eventually found guilty of ill-treatment in the city's criminal court. However, Genevieve has so far failed to get any compensation from them. Genevieve therefore prays that Edmond Dreux, Francois Doriocourt Jr. and Felicité Bernoudy Doriocourt be condemned to pay her, "in solido," the sum of $1,500 in damages plus costs of suit.

Result: Partially granted.
