Dyer Boon, a man of color, represents that, although he was born free, he was deprived of his liberty "by various wrongful and fraudulent acts." He is now being "held in Bondage as a slave by" John Brown. Dyer claims that this very court decreed his mother to be free and that Brown is well aware of it. . Notwithstanding this fact, Brown continues to hold Dyer as a slave. Dyer therefore prays that the court recognizes "his rights and liberty as a freeman."
