Gabriel Gerome, a free man of color, presents to the court that he "is in the intention of emancipating" his forty-five-year-old female slave named Margueritte. He vouches that Margueritte has always "led a good conduct" and has never been guilty of any "crime or offences described in the law relative to the affranchisement of slaves." Gerome asks the court to give the "necessary order" and to direct the sheriff to post up the "usual publications prescribed by law in such case."
