Petition #20882108

Abstract

Antoine Michoud petitions to receive compensation from the city of New Orleans for the value of his slave named Robert, also known as Norbonne, who has run away from the city jail and never been found. Michoud represents that Robert was a good servant and "very intelligent," but also "very cunning and of some bad habits." In December 1820, Michoud, having to punish Robert for some misdeed, placed him in the city jail. He warned the "Gaoler" of Robert's determination to escape and asked that he be put in chains and not allowed to leave the jail, even if it was to "work with the other slaves." The jailer informed Michoud "that the ordinances regulating his duties were contrary with the compliance of such a request." The overseers, however, were informed to keep a close watch on Robert. Nevertheless, Robert ran away at the end of February. Michoud prays that the "mayor aldermen and inhabitants" of the city, "in their Capacity of body Corporate," be condemned to pay him Robert's value of $1,500, plus interest and costs of suit.
