Petition #20882124

Abstract

Charles Stewart of Wilkinson County, Mississippi, owns a cotton plantation in the Louisiana parish of Pointe Coupée. He petitions to get compensation from Abram Villaret, who has killed one of his slaves and occasioned the disappearance of another. Stewart claims that, on the 3rd of September 1821, Villaret killed Harry, a mulatto slave living on the Pointe Coupée plantation. Harry was "an orderly, obedient slave," an excellent cotton picker," and of "particular value on the plantation." He was worth $1,200. Stewart also alleges that another slave named Ephraim ran away after being a witness to Harry's murder. Stewart sets Ephraim's value at $1,000. Stewart prays that Villaret be decreed to pay him $3,000 in damages and court costs.
