Petition #20882211

Abstract

Susan Bettis petitions for a separation of bed and board and a separation of property from her third husband, William Black. Susan claims that, in addition to his "habitual intoxication" and "the disorder of his affairs," her husband’s treatment of her has been "cruel & abusive in the extreme." "At various and divers other times," Black "went about the house" with a loaded pistol "threatening that he would take the life of some person, meaning truly that he would take” her life. Black also recently drove her "out of doors," declaring that "he would no longer suffer” her “to live or reside with him as his wife." Susan asks the court to grant her ownership of the property she brought to the marriage, which includes three slaves, a yoke of oxen, calves, and household furniture. She also requests custody of her nineteen-month-old son, Thomas, and a decree of separation from bed and board between Black and herself.

Result: Withdrawn; settled out of court.
