Joaquim Diaz and his wife, Catherine Milledouce, are the petitioners. They present to the court that, on the 22nd of November 1818, Catherine purchased a female slave named Charlotte under the express condition that she would emancipate her four years later. Joaquim and Catherine declare that Charlotte is now above thirty years of age and that she has never been guilty of "the crimes or misdemeanors presented by law in cases of this nature." They ask the court to authorize them to make the required publications so that Charlotte may be emancipated.
