Petition #20882319

Abstract

Manette Fonteneau petitions for a separation of property from her husband François Perot, Jr. According to Manette, she brought a dowry of $1,000 and a “further sum” of $400 into her 1820 marriage. In 1821, the couple received seven slaves and a tract of land as Manette’s portion of her father’s estate. Manette maintains that, since their marriage, François “has contracted large debts” and has “wasted” the $1,400. With her husband’s affairs in “great disorder,” she believes that her “dower and paraphernalia are in danger.” Manette prays for a separation of property, for the return of the $1,400, and asks that the “aforesaid property may be delivered” to her for her administration.
