Celeste Touzin explains that she brought $400 “in money” and “a negress” named Eulalie, worth $500, into her 1815 marriage to Benjamin Dranguet. However, Benjamin is now “in failing circumstances” and “his affairs,” notes Celeste, “are greatly embarrassed.” Celeste now fears that her dowry “is in great danger of being lost.” She asks the court for a separation of property, a judgment for the “balance that is four hundred dollars,” and costs of suit.
