Petition #20882637

Abstract

Lucy Perrie seeks to be compensated for the death of one of her slaves and injury to two others. She also accuses James A. Williams, the overseer on her Tunica Plantation, of gross neglect of his duties. Perrie informs the court that, on 10 October 1826, Williams and Arthur Adams "did willfully & illegally shoot & wound" one of her slaves named Milo. They also "did illegally cruelly, unusually, & unnecessarily beat and whip the said slave." Despite medical attention, the slave later died. On the same day, Williams and Adams inflicted "punishment of a most violent & atrocious character" on another of her slaves named Isaac. Previous to these incidents, in 1825, Adams had shot and wounded one of her slaves named Stephen. Perrie also accuses Williams of having "neglected his business, destroyed the fencing injured the plantation & property, cruelly treated and unusually & unnecessarily abused her slaves, & drove them off the plantation." Perrie seeks compensation for the death of Milo, the wounding of Isaac and Stephen, and the neglect of her plantation.
