Petition #20882730

Abstract

Jean François Canonge and his wife, the former Jeanne Amélie Mercier, present to the court that they are the "proprietors" of a male mulatto slave named Joseph, aged "upwards of forty years." The petitioners further present that Joseph came into their possession through the settlement of the estate of Marie Gracieuse Fontenelle Mercier, Jeanne Amélie's mother, and that it is their intention to "set him free." They vouch that Joseph is of "an unexceptionable" character, and has neither committed any crime nor run away. They therefore ask the court to order that "the necessary publications & advertisements" be made and "posted up according to law" so that, if no opposition is made after the usual delays, they may be able to set Joseph free and execute "unto him" a "full, authentic & complete deed & act of freedom."
