Jean François Canonge and his wife, Jeanne Amélie Mercier, present to the court that they are the "true & sole owners" of a male mulatto slave named Marcel, aged "above thirty." They vouch that Marcel is of "a good temper & good moral character," has never "rendered himself" guilty of any "capital crime, or any crime, offence or misdemeanour whatsoever," and has never run away. In one word, say Jean François and Jeanne Amélie, Marcel "is worthy of enjoying" the gift of freedom. They therefore ask the court to order that "the necessary notices, publications & advertisements" be made and posted up during the delay required by law, so that, if no opposition is made to the "enfranchisement," they may be "entitled" to set Marcel free and execute "unto him" a "full, authentic & complete deed & act of freedom."
