Jeannette Robert, a free woman of color, is the sole heir to the estate of her late son, Norbert Robert. She presents to the court that, in 1821, her son purchased a then thirty-four-year-old female slave named Genevieve from the widow Fitzgerald, under the condition that he would "set" the said slave "at liberty" as soon as the full purchase price had been paid. Jeannette Norbert further presents that now that the "price of the said purchase" has been paid, she is "bound and desirous" to "manumit" Genevieve. She asks the court to order the sheriff to make the "necessary publications" of her intention to emancipate Genevieve.
