Mary Robinson presents to the court that, "induced by motives of humanity and gratitude for services rendered," she is desirous to set free her forty-five-year-old female slave named Lucy. She declares that, for the previous four years and more, Lucy has "led" an honest conduct, has not run away, and has not been guilty of any crime. Mary Robinson therefore asks the court to order that the legal notices be "made and published in the French and English languages," asking any person who may have a legal opposition to the emancipation to file it within forty days from the date of the notices; and, if no opposition is filed or if an opposition is not deemed valid by the court, to authorize her to pass the act of emancipation.
