Petition #20882788

Abstract

Joseph Tricou presents to the court that he is the owner of a twenty-four-year-old male mulatto slave named Celestin, to whom he "is desirous" to bequeath freedom in consideration of "good conduct and faithful services," and because it was the wish of Celestin's father, the late Celestin Glapion. Joseph Tricou explains that Celestin is the "natural," i.e., illegitimate, son of the late Glapion, who "appropriated" a sum of money in his last will and testament for the specific purpose of emancipating his son. Tricou vouches that Celestin, who was "born and brought" up in his family, is of "steady character" and has been so "from the time of his first reason." Tricou asks the court to "communicate" his petition to the police jury, so that they can determine if he should be allowed to take the steps "prescribed by law" for the manumission of his slave [an external information source reveals that Celestin Glapion was a free man of color].
