Petition #20882797

Abstract

Isabella Hawkins, a free woman of color, petitions the court for an injunction against the sale of her slave Milly, four horses, and two cows, which were seized to satisfy the debts of John W. Walker. She charges that Stephen Vanwickle, the sheriff who confiscated the property, "well knew that the aforesaid property belonged" to her. Hawkins states that she purchased the property from Walker and that the proceedings are designed "to vex oppress & harass" her. She asks for an injunction against the sale of her property and for damages in the amount of $1,000. Related documents revealed that John W. Walker was Isabella's former owner, and that he had freed her and her mulatto child, Nancy, in the state of Ohio.
