Petition #20882798

Abstract

Marguerite Charlotte Cabaret has received authorization from her husband, Albin Eusebe Michel, to petition for herself ["agissant tant en son nom personnel"] and for her brother Alexandre Cabaret. She represents that, in 1813, she and her brother inherited all the slaves from the estate of their father, Pierre Marie Cabaret, and were charged with freeing several of them, including a female mulatto named Marguerite, also known as Avril. She explains that, although at the time of the estate settlement Marguerite could not be emancipated by reason of her age, she was immediately considered free and has been so de facto ever since ["de fait"]. Marguerite, whose conduct has been above reproach, is now almost twenty and has received a proposal from a free man of color, with the prospect of a happy future ["un sort heureux"]. The petitioners pray the police jury to dispense Marguerite from the age requirement and to authorize her to receive the official act of emancipation [Original in French].
