Petition #20882901

Abstract

Nanette, a free woman of color, and Antoine La Cour, a free man of color, present that, in 1819, Nanette received from La Cour, by "a notarial act," the title to her daughter, a slave named Hortense. Hortense is now thirty and she has four children: twelve-year-old Marcelitte, seven-year-old Josephine, and a set of two-year-old twins named Rosilette and Joseph. Nanette is now desirous to emancipate her daughter and grandchildren, and Antoine La Cour, whom the family will continue to serve under the terms of the title transfer, has accepted to join her to help secure their freedom. The petitioners declare that all five slaves have neither run away nor committed any crime "that should operate against their being free." They ask the court to submit their petition to the police jury and to order that "other requisites of the law for enfranchisement" be "given and made" [Original in English and French].
