Jean Mason presents to the court that he has recently purchased from one Theodore Nicolet his five-year-old "natural," i.e. illegitimate, daughter, a five-year-old mulatto girl named Eliza, with the express intent of emancipating her as soon as "consistent" with the laws of the state. He further presents that he fully intends to comply with the obligation laid upon him by the law of the "31st of January 1827" to "maintain, clothe and feed" Eliza in a "decent manner," as well as to have her taught a trade by which she can earn a living. Mason therefore asks the court to submit his petition for the review and consent of the police jury, which consent will enable the court to order the "necessary publications" by the sheriff.
