Petition #20882984

Abstract

Louis Morin, a free person of color, presents to the court that he has bought from a widow named Mrs. Dreux a forty-four-year-old mulatto slave ["griff"] named Henry. Louis Morin explains that Henry has rendered him many services over the long years that he has known him; and that he has purchased him specifically to emancipate him as a reward for these services. He declares that Henry is "honest & of good morals." He therefore asks the court to permit him to "proceed to the ordinary measures" required by law, i.e. to order the notice of emancipation, and to authorize him, after the required period of advertisement, to "proceed further."
