Petition #20882996
- Orleans Parish, Louisiana. December 10, 1829. - May 31, 1830.
- Court: Parish
- Salutation: To the Honorable the Parish Court for the Parish of Orleans
Abstract
John Morris Back presents to the court that, in 1829, he purchased a twenty-eight-year-old slave named Andrew from Joseph Meek Junior of Nashville, Tennessee. Morris claims that Andrew, for whom he paid $457.50 with a promissory note to Meek, came warranted "free from all the vices and maladies prescribed by Law." However, he has now found out that Andrew is and has "long before been addicted to running away;" and he alleges that Meek knew about it and "failed to make full disclosure" of it. Back therefore prays that Meek be condemned to take back Andrew and return the note for $457.50. He also asks for $300 in damages with interest.
Result: Granted; appealed; affirmed.
