Petition #20882997

Abstract

Jean Jacques Tartreau is the testamentary executor of the late Lorence Charbonneau, a free woman of color. He presents to the court that, by her last will and testament, the late Charbonneau had "commanded" him to emancipate seven of her slaves as soon as possible. The seven slaves, all under the age of thirty, are the children of a free woman of color named Eulalie, a former slave whom Lorence Charbonneau had emancipated as a reward for good conduct, and of a "well-off" free man of color named Pierre Dolon. The seven slaves are: Mélie, Aglaë, Pierre Louis, Rosiliette, Jean Baptiste, Sanite, and Pépé. Jean Jacques Tartreau further presents that the seven slaves' father, Pierre Dolon, is ready to take charge of them; and that he, Jean Jacques Tartreau, will keep the two boys as his apprentices until the age of twenty-one. He vouches that all seven slaves are "very good," obedient, and industrious. He therefore asks the court to "lay his petition" before the police jury of the parish for their consideration and approval of his request to emancipate the seven slaves.
