Petition #20882998

Abstract

Medée Davis, a free woman of color, presents to the court that, in 1823, she purchased from Mrs. Paxton her "natural," i.e. illegitimate, child, a slave named George, who had proven himself "so dutiful and affectionate in his manner" that she is desirous to free him. She declares herself confident that George's "habits of industry, good nature & peaceable deportment," as well as his skills as a shoemaker, will in fact "be her chief aid and support in her old age." She asks the court to "lay" her application before the police jury, who has "the right" to dispense with the time prescribed by law for the emancipation of twenty-two-year-old George.
