Petition #20883124

Abstract

Pierre Valentin Porée, a free man of color, presents to the police jury that, in 1823, he married a mulatto woman ["griffonnne"]named Ursule, whom he believed had been freed by the last will and testament of her grandmother, a free woman of color named Rosette Brazier. Valentin Porée further presents that Rosette Brazier, having been advised that her last will and testament only conveyed an "eventual hope" but not the reality of freedom, recently made, in his favor, "a donation inter vivos" of Ursule and their four children. The gift was made under the express condition that he would emancipate his family "as soon as it could be done legally." Valentin Porée vouches that Ursule is "a good mother, an affectionate wife," and that she "has constantly behaved according to sound morals and good principles." He therefore asks the police jury to consent to the emancipation of his wife and children, and of "any children that may issue" from their marriage previous to the emancipation.
