Petition #20883131

Abstract

William Johnson, a long time resident of the city, is a free man of color who has always been employed by the "Gnl Government" or the city. He presents to the court and the police jury that he is the owner of a female slave named Hannah, whom he wishes to emancipate. He declares that Hannah has "rendered him important services at various times in nursing and attending him in sickness," and she has always been "a faithful, honest, sober, and obedient servant." He asks the police jury to authorize him to emancipate Hannah, without compelling him to furnish the obligation required by the 25 March 1831 act of the state legislature and without compelling her to leave the state.
