Joseph Aicard, a merchant, is acting in the name of Jacques Christian under a power of attorney given to him by an 1829 "notarial deed." He presents to the court that Jacques Christian, now absent from the city, gave him the "special power" to emancipate his female slave named Sophie, as soon as Sophie would reach the "age required by law or even before" if the consent of the police jury could be obtained. Aicard explains that he has now obtained such consent. He therefore asks the court to authorize him to pass the act of emancipation "after the forty days advertisements prescribed by law."
