In 1829, he purchased, from one Marie Celeste Livaudais, née Marigny, his four \"natural,\" i.e. illegitimate, children: Edmond, Celestine, Henry, and Françoise.  The latter died in 1830.  Fortier also recently purchased, from the same Marie Celeste Livaudais, his wife Phrosine, mother of his children, and one other child named Armand; both purchases having been made under the condition that he would immediately emancipate all of them.
