- Orleans Parish, Louisiana. cicra September 1831. - October 31, 1831.
- Court: Police Jury
- Salutation: To the president and Members of the Police Jury of New Orleans
Abstract
Pauline Lorraine, a free woman of color, presents to the police jury that, in 1828, she purchased, from a free man of color named Edward Jenkins, her two children: a mulatto girl named Marie Caroline and a boy named Antoine Cherry, the latter having since died. She explains to the jury that she is growing old and is afraid she might die, leaving in slavery her daughter, who has "in great measure contributed," through her labor, to pay the agreed-upon price for her brother and herself. She asks the police jury to give the "necessary authorization" to fulfill all the formalities prescribed by law "before any court of competent jurisdiction" [Original in English and French].
