Petition #20883236

Abstract

Josephine Rinker, a free woman of color, presents to the court that, to her great joy ["ayant eu le bonheur"], she has been able to save enough money in order to purchase her own sister, a twenty-year-old mulatto slave named Marguerite. She further presents that, having purchased Marguerite from a planter of St. Charles parish named Silvain Baudoin, under the express condition that she would emancipate her, she is now under the obligation to do so. She therefore asks the police jury to authorize her to free her sister, whose conduct has always been regular and remarkable for her submissiveness and respect towards white people; a conduct from which Marguerite has never strayed ["dont elle ne s'écarta jamais"][Original in French].
