Petition #20883327
- Orleans Parish, Louisiana. September 6, 1833. - February 20, 1834.
- Court: Police Jury
- Salutation: To the Honorable Charles Maurian, Parish Judge of the Parish of Orleans, and to the Honorable the members composting the Police Jury in and for the parish of New Orleans
Abstract
Babet, a free woman of color, presents to the court and the police jury that she has just purchased her son, a mulatto man named Jim, "upwards" of thirty years of age, from Joseph Paul Fabre of the parish of St. James. She further presents that a condition of the sale was that she would emancipate Jim, who has always been a "good servant" and a "faithful boy," and has rendered "important services" to his former master. Babet therefore asks the court and the police jury to authorize her to free her son, without his being "obliged" to leave the state as required by law.
