- Salutation: To the President & members of the Police Jury in and for the Parish of Orleans
Abstract
Antoine Benjamin, a free man of color, presents to the police jury that, in 1832, he purchased from the widow Daublin his forty-six-year-old sister, named Louise, "under the condition that he should manumit" her. He explains that he now wishes to manumit Louise as soon as possible "in obedience" to the condition of sale. He declares that Louise has always been "a good subject & of approved good morals," as well as a "faithful, laborious & worthy" servant. He "earnestly supplicates" the police jury to grant him the necessary "faculty" to proceed to the other formalities required by law.
