Petition #20883331
- Orleans Parish, Louisiana. cicra April 10, 1833. - February 20, 1834.
- Court: Police Jury
- Salutation: To the Honorable the President and members of the Police Jury for the Parish of Orleans
Abstract
Louis Séjour, a free man of color, presents to the police jury that he is the "legitimate" owner of a mulatto slave named Etienne, now forty-two-years of age, whom he purchased under the condition that he would emancipate him immediately in consideration of "long and faithful services" to his previous "masters." He declares that, to his knowledge, Etienne has led an "honest and exemplary conduct," and has always been "respectful towards all white persons." He asks the police jury to authorize him to emancipate Etienne, without Etienne being "obliged" to leave the state.
