Frosine, a free woman of color, presents to the police jury that she wishes to give freedom to her thirty-two-year-old slave named Jean Pierre, who is also her son, as a reward for his faithful and important services to her. She declares that Jean Pierre was born in Louisiana and is capable of earning a living. She tells the jury that if they exempt him from having to leave the state when free and authorize the formalities required by law, they will have fulfilled the wishes ["les voeux"] of a mother who will never cease to pray for them [Original in French].
