John Hanslaw presents to the court and the police jury that he recently purchased a female slave named Louisa from Henry Perret, under the expression condition that he would emancipate her. He vouches that Louisa has always "conducted herself in a proper and becoming manner" and that she can "get her living" by her industry. He further explains that Louisa has rendered "long and important services" to her former master and mistress. He therefore asks the court and police jury to authorize him to emancipate Louisa without compelling him "to furnish the obligation required by the last section of the act" of 1830, which regulates the movement of free people of color into the state of Louisiana.
