- Orleans Parish, Louisiana. May 18, 1833. - February 19, 1834.
- Court: Police Jury
- Salutation: To the Honorable Charles Maurian Judge of the Parish Court in and for the city & Parish of New Orleans and to the Honorable, the Members composing the Police jury for said Parish
Abstract
John Scott, a free man of color, presents to the parish court judge and the members of the police jury that he is the owner of a thirty-year-old female mulatto slave named Henny and of Henny's son, two-year-old Joseph. He states that he purchased Henny from her previous owner on the express condition that he would emancipate her as soon as the law would permit. Henny's previous owner had made this emancipation a condition of the sale on account of "important services" she had rendered to him. Scott asks the judge and the members of the police jury to authorize him to emancipate Henny and her son "without compelling them to leave the state."
