Marie Rillieux, a free woman of color, presents to the court that she is the owner of her twenty-eight-year-old daughter named Josephine, whom she wishes to emancipate in consideration of "her faithful & important services" and good conduct. She vouches that Josephine has "always had an honest conduct," has never run away nor been guilty of "any criminal misdemeanor." She therefore asks the court to order that "the notices required in such cases" be posted up "according to law."
