Pierre Joseph Adrien Sassinot Dumée presents to the police jury that he wishes to free his thirty-nine-year-old female slave, named Marie. Dumée reveals that he had purchased Marie from one Mrs. Portal in 1829, on the condition that she would be freed upon his death. But he has been so satisfied with her services and so grateful for the care she gave him during two serious illnesses, that he has decided to execute the emancipation proceedings himself. He explains that he wishes to protect Marie from the difficulties that may arise after his death, which may occur any time given his advanced age. He asks the police jury to grant the necessary authorization for Marie's emancipation [Original in French].
