Abstract
Prudence Martin, a free woman of color, presents to the police jury that, in 1829, she purchased a slave named Suzanne from Martin Duralde; and that it was agreed between the parties that Suzanne should be set free at the end of three years from the date of sale. Prudence Martin declares that she is ready to free Suzanne, who is now fifty years of age, on account of her "faithful and important services." She asks the police jury to authorize her to emancipate Suzanne without "her being obliged to leave the state."
