Rose Fusilier, a free woman of color, presents to the police jury that she is the owner of her granddaughter, a twenty-two-year-old mulatto slave named Madeleine. She further presents that she is "desirous" of setting Madeleine free on account of "the relationship which exists between them" as well as the "long and faithful services" she has received from her. She vouches that Madeleine has always "behaved as a good and faithful servant," has always been "respectful towards white persons," and has never run away. She therefore asks the police jury to authorize her to emancipate Madeleine, without compelling the latter to leave the state.
