Petition #20883471

Abstract

Marc Lafitte, testamentary executor of the late Louise Duvivier, a free woman of color, presents to the police jury that he has been authorized by Jacinthe Gourgon, the only son and heir of the late woman, to fulfill the formalities for emancipating his mother's slaves, in compliance with her wishes. Lafitte therefore asks the police jury to authorize him to free the only three slaves remaining in the estate: forty-six-year-old Marie-Noël, Marie Noël's thirty-year-old daughter Marceline, and a man named Lamy of twenty-nine or thirty years of age. All the other slaves have been freed and sent out of state. Lafitte declares that all three slaves are of good character and are capable by their talent and industry to earn a living. Lafitte asks the police jury to authorize him to free the three slaves and to allow them to remain in the area ["le pays"] [Original in French].
