Alexandrine Monerie, a free woman of color, presents to the police jury that, since her "infancy," she has known a now fifty-year-old female slave named Marie Louise, who has nursed her through several "serious diseases" and has bestowed on her all "her attention cares and tenderness." In consideration of these services, Alexandrine purchased and fully paid for Marie Louise in 1830, with the specific purpose of emancipating her. She explains that, on account of her current bad health, she is anxious to free Marie Louise "as speedily as possible" for fear that she may "part this life" before the accomplishment of this "long deserved day." She asks the police jury to authorize her to "fulfill the formalities prescribed by law," so that she can "manumit" Marie Louise without the latter being compelled to leave the state of Louisiana.
