Petition #20883492

Abstract

Augustin Laloire, a free man of color, presents to the police jury that he is the "lawful owner" of a female slave named Françoise, as shown by an 1833 act of sale. He explains to the police jury that he and Françoise have lived as if they were married for fourteen years, although her "condition of slave did not permit them to enter into the bonds of matrimony;" and that he therefore purchased her "with great pleasure," using "the proceeds of his labor and industry for the payment of the price for which she was adjudicated," with the intention of becoming "her lawful husband." He declares that Françoise is a "washer woman," a nurse and a "mid-wife," who has "intelligence enough" to "maintain herself" without his assistance. He asks the police jury to consider the "premises" of his petition and authorize him to fulfill "all the formalities prescribed by law for manumission" of a slave.
