Manon Vignaud, a free woman of color, presents to the police jury that, within the last year, she has purchased a male slave named Léveillé from the partnership of Jourdan frères, which had inherited him from the "late widow of Joseph Aicard." She presents that the condition of sale stipulated that she should emancipate Léveillé as soon as possible, in consideration of his "long and faithful services" to Joseph Aicard and later his widow, in whose service he has been since he was a boy, namely for more than thirty years. Manon Vignaud asks the police jury to consent to the emancipation and to dispense her from furnishing the bond required by law "to prevent free persons of color from entering this state and for other purposes."
