Petition #20883549

Abstract

Marguerite Jerome, a free woman of color, presents to the court and the police jury that she has purchased from the estate of Gabriel L. Jerome her thirty-three-year-old daughter named Arthemise and Arthemise's children, a nine-year-old mulatto boy named Norbert and a seven-year-old boy named Henry. She explains that she purchased her daughter and grandchildren for the express purpose of emancipating them, so that they can "participate in the blessings of freedom enjoyed by her." She vouches that Arthemise is "of sober industrious habits, healthy and competent" to sustain herself and her children. She also vouches that Arthemise is "free from any of the crimes and blemishes contemplated by law" in cases of intended emancipation. She asks the court to grant freedom to her daughter and grandchildren and to order the sheriff to make "the publications required by law" [Docket in French].
