Antoine Benjamin, a free man of color, presents to the court that he recently purchased his uncle, named Grand Jose, from the widow and heirs of the late Claude Trémé for the sum of $1,000 cash, under the condition that he "would manumit" him. He explains that his uncle had "laid by" the money for many years, "dollar by dollar," in the hope "that he would once enjoy the benefits of freedom." Antoine Benjamin further explains that the sum of $1,000 was in fact "far under" his uncle's real value, but the Trémés had agreed to let him go at that price as a reward for "services rendered." Benjamin therefore asks the court to order that "the publications required by law" be posted up and, if there is no opposition, to authorize him to execute the act of freedom.
