Marianne, a free woman of color, presents to the police jury that she was given her freedom "some years since," as a reward for "long and faithful services" rendered to her late master, Pierre Liquet. She further presents that, since she was given freedom, she has been enabled to purchase her daughter Julie, now twenty-two years of age, by "pursuing a course of unceasing labour and of strict economy." She explains that she is now "advanced in years" and "earnestly wish" to bestow "the blessings of freedom" on her only child, who has always shown towards her "filial obedience and affection" and would thus be induced to continue on her path of "uniform good conduct." Marianne therefore asks the police jury to consent to Julie's emancipation, without compelling her to leave the state.
